Dhoni’s native village without road, water & play field

Lawali, (Almora) 18 Aug: A remote village in the Kumaon hills is riding high on hopes sparked by the success of an Indian cricketer. The hopes are of getting a road and supply of potable water. Thanks to the soaring popularity of master blaster Mahendra Singh Dhoni, the villagers of his ancestral village are learning to dream of better things.

Dhoni’s village is presently accessible only on foot. The nearest roadhead to Lawali is Jainti, which is 4 kms away. Though electricity has reached Dhoni’s village but potable water is yet to be piped here.

Dilip Singh Dhoni, Pradhan of the village, told Garhwal Post, “The stardom of wicketkeeper- batsman Mahendra Singh Dhoni has inspired our children to follow in his footmarks. It is sad that despite repeated requests made to the State Government, our village is yet to get connected with an all weather road.”

“The villagers are collecting water from a spring. With Mahinder Singh Dhoni hogging the limelight in world cricket, our village hopes to get some attention,” the Pradhan added.
v The success of Dhoni has motivated youths from the Lawali village to opt for cricket as a career. But no playfield exists here. The children have no other choice but to play in small agriculture fields.

Dhoni with his attacking batting became an overnight star in India. His fame also gladdened the hearts of all highlanders. A group of local artists have produced a VCD in praise of this Indian cricketer, which is called, ‘Dhoni Dhamal’.

The association of Dhoni with Uttarakhand has made this little known village famous. Stating this, Puran Bhandari says, “Now many cricket fans pay a visit to this little known village. Some even came here with sweets to congratulate the relatives of the Dhoni family when he scored 183 against Sri Lanka in a one-day match.”

Dhoni's father may have left several years ago to settle down in Ranchi, but he continues to keep in touch with his roots.

The village just wants a visit by Mahinder Dhoni, now. The rest, they hope, the subsequent media coverage will do. In its wake may come the much sought after road, and water supply.
